Cisco Systems, Inc. Announces OpenChain Conformance

By Conformance, News

Cisco Systems, Inc (Cisco), a Platinum Member of the OpenChain Project, today announces conformance with the industry standard for open source compliance in the supply chain. As a founding member of the OpenChain Project, Cisco has been instrumental in defining, developing and deploying both the standard and its extensive corpus of reference material. Their conformance marks another milestone in the broadening adoption of the standard throughout silicon, embedded, mobile, telecommunications, enterprise, software and cloud market segments.

“It is hard to overstate the important of this announcement,” says Shane Coughlan, OpenChain General Manager. “Over the past three years Cisco has helped to transform the way we can do compliance across complex supply chains. Leading by example, Samantha and her team have taken this opportunity to seek solutions that provide a high return on investment through efficient use of people and time. With OpenChain set to become an ISO standard in the near future, we look forward to continued collaboration and in supporting the broader community seeking excellence in open source governance.”

“Cisco is truly honored to be part of such an important team with the OpenChain Project.  The industry collaboration, synergies and betterment for our open chain community is revolutionary.  We are equally pleased to announce our conformance to this industry standard, as it enables our internal teams to understand ‘why’ behind the compliance rigor.  Having established internal policies, processes and tooling automation, which can be measured and benchmarked with OpenChain is one of our major value drivers.  We look forward to continuing our partnership with OpenChain Projects and our peer industry partners, as software innovates for years to come.” Samantha Elliott, Open Source Leader.

About the OpenChain Project

The OpenChain Project builds trust in open source by making open source license compliance simpler and more consistent. The OpenChain Specification defines a core set of requirements every quality compliance program must satisfy. The OpenChain Curriculum provides the educational foundation for open source processes and solutions, whilst meeting a key requirement of the OpenChain Specification. OpenChain Conformance allows organizations to display their adherence to these requirements. The result is that open source license compliance becomes more predictable, understandable and efficient for participants of the software supply chain.

B2M Solutions joins the OpenChain Community of Conformance

By Conformance, News

Today the OpenChain Project welcomes B2M Solutions to our Community of Conformance. The conformance process was lead by the OpenChain Partner Moorcrofts LLP in conjunction with its sister company Orcro Ltd.

Formed in 2002, B2M Solutions is a global software company dramatically improving how enterprise mobility is operated and managed. Partners include the likes of BT, Zebra Technologies and most recently Panasonic.

OpenChain, a project of the Linux Foundation, brings established governance principles to the software supply chain. It adopts best-practice from other compliance areas and maps them to software procurement, giving businesses a clear path to minimizing infringement risk in procuring, developing and deploying software. The result is that open source license compliance becomes more predictable, understandable and efficient for participants of the software supply chain.

Julie Purves, B2M Solutions CEO said: “Although smaller than many of the other companies who have achieved this milestone of compliance, we are considered to be technology leaders in our field, and it’s important to be able to reassure our clients that we are not only proactive in reacting to industry developments but also, where appropriate, leading those developments. Our partners include a number of global companies who are embracing OpenChain. Although none of our partners have compelled us to become OpenChain compliant, we believe that pre-emptively obtaining this important status means we are better able to demonstrate we are responsive to the needs of global brands and their end-customers. It also demonstrates our technology leadership by highlighting our desire to lead not only with the latest in cloud-based analytics solutions, but also with compliance to standards critical for our customers.”

Julie continues: “The services provided by Andrew Katz and his team at Moorcrofts and Orcro were outstanding. They not only provided the technical legal advice for us to be able to reach the OpenChain conformance standard, ensuring our component database contained the relevant open source licences, they also worked with our team to establish an appropriate open source policy, tailored to B2M’s specific business needs, and provided the compliance training to our developers.”

“The OpenChain Project is delighted to welcome B2M Solutions to our community of conformance,” says Shane Coughlan, OpenChain General Manager. “This is a milestone in building out our community in the mobile sphere and in deepening our presence in Europe. OpenChain Conformance is a mark of quality and efficiency in the adoption, use and distribution of open source code. We are looking forward to sharing this benefit throughout the B2M eco-system and to building a productive long-term relationship with their great team.”

Their participation is especially valued as it ties into collaboration with NHS England, NHS Digital and other key stakeholders involved with open source in the British National Health System.

“We have been supporting Code4Health for a number of years to manage their open source supply chain. The OpenChain Specification has enabled us to validate the processes meet industry best practice and that the solutions being promoted to NHS are best of breed and this can be transparently demonstrated.” Martin Callinan, Director Source Code Control Ltd.

AB EHR’s participation is also the subject of our first case study. You can learn more about it here and you can also download the full case study in PDF format here.

“Community is at the heart of OpenChain as a project,” says Shane Coughlan, OpenChain Project Director. “This goes beyond the narrow confines of one industry segment or one market approach. It is about every entity that makes, uses or supports open source software. We are delighted to demonstrate this broad applicability in close partnership with organizations like AB EHR and Source Code Control.”

The OpenChain community of conformant organizations is growing across a wide range of stakeholders from all corners of software creation and use. You can follow the progress of our conformance program here and you can participate in our community here. Everyone, from organizations of all types, is very welcome.

OpenChain Welcomes credativ

SAN FRANCISCO, United States, August 7, 2017 –The OpenChain Project is delighted to welcome credativ to the community of OpenChain Conformant organizations.

“The addition of credativ brings another important open source pillar into the OpenChain community and boosts our mission to make open source software compliance easier, more understandable and more transparent,” says Shane Coughlan, OpenChain Program Manager. “credativ is one of the early supporters of Free and Open Source Software in our community. They have engaged at a unique time. We are looking forward to working closely together to channel influence in the European, American and Indian market as we scale OpenChain self-certification.”

“It is an important step for us to join the OpenChain community,” says Dr Michael Meskes, CEO of credativ. “ Through our extensive experience with Open Source in business, we work with a lot of different companies and know how to improve upon the positive impact that Open Source provides, not only in technical but also compliance issues. Therefore we would like to further extend the reputation of the OpenChain project by expressing adherence to their specifications. We think that this leads to more and more companies gaining trust and confidence in Free and Open Source Software. One of the key aspects of the OpenChain certification is, that it builds trust, which, already rooted in the core principles of Free and Open Source Software, thusly provides an essential contribution to the general acceptance of Open Source.”

The OpenChain Project identifies key recommended processes for effective open source management. The project builds trust in open source by making open source license compliance simpler and more consistent.

Organizations of all sizes are invited to review the OpenChain Project, to complete our free Online Self-Certification Questionnaire, and to join our community of trust.
